What Causes Knee Pain in Chicago IL?

Common Causes of Knee Pain in Chicago IllinoisWhat is the function of the knees?

Knee pain or knee injuries can lead to limited mobility, as the knees are critical to the stability and flexibility of the body. If the knees are not right, we will have difficulty bending and stretching them. This limitation will affect our ability to stand, walk, run, kneel, jump, or turn. But the knees don’t work alone. There are other parts of the body that help the knees do their job, such as:

  • Bone
  • Cartilage
  • Muscles
  • Ligaments
  • Tendons

An injury to any of these areas around the knee can also cause knee pain or injury.

What is the cause of knee pain?

Pain exists for an evolutionary reason. It is a message sent by our brain to let us know that something is not right and needs our attention.

So, let’s focus on understanding what can cause knee pain. In fact, men, women, children, of any age, can suffer from knee pain. It can happen to anyone, but it is true that it is more common as we age.

It is not known for sure what causes knee arthritis. Some researchers believe that it is a combination of factors:

  • Muscular weakness;
  • Weight gain;
  • Hereditary factor;
  • Injury or repeated stress on the knee;
  • Constant exposure to cold;
  • Aging.

Once we understand the fact that knee arthritis can be caused by a combination of factors, we will stop to study in more detail the most common manifestations: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Osteoarthritis (OA).

What are the most common knee injuries?

These are the most common types of knee injuries that can result in extreme knee pain:

  • Strong blow, twist or tear in the ligaments and tendons that connect and support the knee structure;
  • Tear in the meniscus (the spongy part of the knee, shaped like a C);
  • Patella fracture  (circular bone that articulates with the femur);
  • Patella dislocation;
  • Injuries from wear and tear or inflammation, after suffering prolonged and repeated pressure on the knee (going up and down stairs, cycling, jogging, jumping, spending many hours standing).

Athletes or individuals whose work involves repetitive stress on the knees will have a high risk of developing some type of knee injury.
