Scar Management and Desensitization in Chicago IL

Did You Recently Have An Injury or Surgery and Found Yourself Concerned with the Amount of Sensitivity the Area Around the Injury Has Developed?

Do you feel that the skin at or around the scar or place of injury has become overly sensitive or painful? If such is the case, this is because you have hypersensitive nerve endings that could possibly benefit from an effective treatment known as desensitization training. Not to mention that if you are feeling abnormal hypersensitivity to a simple touch, temperature or pressure following an injury or surgery, the best thing to do is get an appointment with your healthcare physician as you can potentially develop a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

CRPS is a condition that can occur after suffering from a stroke, amputation, soft tissue injury or a surgery. It can affect a small area or even an entire limb. CRPS is characterized by burning pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint or joints around the affected area, dramatic changes in hair or nail growth, change in skin appearance and increase in the sensation to stimuli that normally don’t cause pain.

Unfortunately, CRPS isn’t completely understood yet and requires a team of professionals to work together to address the condition comprehensively. Any patient who is thought to have CRPS symptoms should see a physician who specializes in medical pain management. Such specialists can provide treatment and often aggressive therapies to help alleviate symptoms.

If you are experiencing any hypersensitive type of pain, you can try out these methods:

Start of with some soft material like a dry terry or a wash cloth. Then gently rub it over the affected area back and forth, gradually, for a minute or a two. In most of the cases, this won’t cause any pain. However, if you are experiencing hypersensitivity, this is painful. The primary goal here is to help your body adapt to its stimuli, which helps to desensitize the painful area. In case the soft material isn’t causing any pain and feels comfortable, you can try to use a small piece of scrub brush that has a rough texture and apply some more pressure. But you should be careful, not to cause any skin breakdown.

Other methods for Desensitization include:

  • Dip the affected area into a bowl of dry rice, sand, kidney beans, cold or warm water
  • Allow the cold or warm water to run over the affected area
  • Using the TENS unit, make sure that you ask your physician or physical therapist prior to using one

If you decide to start with the method of dipping your affected area into medium like rice, water and sand, make sure that you move the affected area around in the bowl until you are unable to tolerate it or reach for one to two minutes. You can also use a combination of all these methods for around 10 to 15 minutes, not more than 3-4 times a day.

Desensitization technique is a natural form of pain management which can help to reduce your need for pain medications. Not to mention that these techniques won’t fix your pain overnight and that desensitization doesn’t work for everyone. However, if you suspect symptoms of CRPS or hypersensitivity, you should immediately consult a healthcare professional and check out what treatment options are available for you to get the pain symptoms under control.
