What Is a Chiropractic Manipulation?
Chiropractic manipulation is the application of pressure in a specific direction, with specific speed and amplitude that is directed into a joint of the body, most often a spinal joint or articulation. Manipulations are performed by our licensed chiropractic doctors who have spent years learning about and practicing specific angles, pressures and different adjustment techniques. The adjustment performed by a chiropractor is delivered in order to restore function to a joint, freeing the joint from restriction, allowing it to move easier and with greater range. This proper alignment, movement and function of the spinal joints is believed to relieve pressure on the nervous system which is partially contained within the spine. Chiropractic manipulation aims to reduce pain and improve mechanical function of the joint. Many times patients will hear and feel a “pop” when they are manipulated. This popping, or cracking sound is normal and should not be a cause for concern. The sound is actually caused by tiny air bubbles that move within the joint when a patient is manipulated. It is important to remember that the beneficial effects of manipulation are not dependent on whether you hear or feel a “pop”. The creation of a joint sound shouldn’t be the primary goal and focus of any manipulation technique.
What is Joint Mobilization?
Joint mobilization is similar to manipulation in that mobilization also aims to restore better movement and function in a joint, also decreasing pain and stiffness, however mobilizations are performed to a lesser degree of magnitude than manipulations. There are four different degrees of mobilizations (I-IV) each with increasing amplitude, whereas a manipulation is considered a grade V on the mobilization scale due to the greatest degree of amplitude associated with a manipulation. Your chiropractor will be able to determine which degree of mobilization, or manipulation is most appropriate to help relieve your pain.
Contraindications
Like with any type of treatment, it is very important that there is a comprehensive history along with a detailed objective examination which has been performed by a skilled medical provider prior to manipulation or mobilization. If a thorough assessment is disregarded, this may lead to unnecessary injury. Chiropractors are skilled at recognizing contraindications to manipulation so if you have any questions or concerns about this type of treatment, we urge you to discuss them openly with your chiropractor. This is something that many patients ask us about and we are more than happy to take the time to explain things so that our patients feel comfortable.
Final Words
There is no doubt the proper manipulation can help to dramatically reduce the overall pain symptoms. However, highly skilled interventions along with education is required in combination in order to gain any long-term benefits of the manipulation. If it is performed appropriately and in a very gentle manner, the manipulations that are performed by a chiropractor can make a world of a different for the patient especially in the treatment of pain and range of motion. At Grandview Health Partners, we look forward to answering all of your questions as well as collaborating at much higher levels to help out patients get back to what they love and enjoy.
